Oxford – home to the world famous Oxford University, J.R Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), the band Supergrass, the Mini Cooper and so much more – is must-see city. Packed with over a thousand years of history you will never be short of sites to see.
The authors Lewis Caroll (Alice in Wonderland), Kenneth Graham (Wind in the Willows), CS Lewis (The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe), TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) to name but a few were all here.
The city is famous for its University and each of the 38 colleges has its own unique character. Christ Church College is a must-see. You can follow the footsteps of the world’s most famous wizard, Harry Potter, in a real Hogwarts Many of the scenes in the films were shot in the College and The Great Hall was replicated in the film studio to create Hogwart’s Hall.
Oxford is known as the ‘The City of Dreaming Spires’ and the architecture around the city is stunning. Don’t miss Oxford Castle, built in 1071 for William the Conqueror, and Blackwell’s Book Store, the biggest book shop in Europe.
With a diverse population of 165,000, modern culture hasn’t been forgotten. You can eat Jamaican, Japanese or Jaipur along the Cowley Road. There are venues and gigs across the City and a pub for every palate. Modern Art Oxford is a fabulous space to see contemporary art or, if you’re looking for an ancient vibe, visit the Ashmolean Museum. The wonderful Pitt Rivers Museum is an Aladdin’s cave of treasures waiting to be discovered – don’t miss the shrunken heads!
The OLX 2010 weekend coincides with ARTWEEKS, Oxfordshire’s visual arts festival. Artists all over the Oxford will open their homes and studios to the public, for free, to share their art. This is a unique opportunity to meet the artists, talk about their work, watch demonstrations and even have a go yourself!
But if history, art, architecture and authors leave you yawning – never fear. With over 15 hours of daylight every day of the OLX weekend, we’re optimistic that the sun will shine! Oxford has some beautiful outdoors spaces and you can choose from punting on the River Thames, picnicking in University Parks or climbing the slope of the South Parks to see the Dreaming Spires in their full glory! Don’t forget your camera!
